Career Resources and Job Search Guides for Job Seekers

Your Time is More Valuable Than Your Money

Have you ever thought about hiring a career, interview or resume coach, but didn't because of the cost?

It's tempting to try to save money on your job search by assuming some of the responsibilities yourself. So, instead of hiring a resume-writing expert, you do your own writing. Or, when facing an important interview, you ask a friend for advice. Not to cast aspersions on your friends and writing abilities, but this is almost always a big mistake.

Part of the reason is simple: You're probably not a writer, especially of the kind of writing needed for resumes. You're also probably not an interview expert or a human resources expert. You can't deliver the same quality advising that those people can. I'm sure you've seen resumes that make you want to avert your eyes, or heard the horror stories about interview mistakes. We'll guarantee you in 90% of those cases, the job seeker did the work themselves.

Here is a reason to hire a professional — you don't have the time to do all the research while keeping your information up-to-date and current. Let's say when you figure it all out, you're getting paid $50 an hour for your work. Now you're going to design your own resume. Since you're not a professional, it will take you two to three times longer to design and print your piece than it would an expert resume writer. So, figure you'll spend 8 to 10 hours getting a finished piece in your hands. That's $500, not including printing costs and/or paper. And for that, you get a piece that looks nothing like what you'd get from a pro.

Spend your time doing market research, networking and searching for the best jobs. Invest in your marketing; hire professionals to write, design, and advise about your interview and career prospects. It's worth the expense, because while you can always get more money, you can't get more time.

Here at MyOnlineCareerCoach.com we have compiled the best resources — from podcasts to blogs to articles to webcasts — and career coaches in the business to help you get your job in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible.
