Thanks to Ceete Sheekels Phd from AboutMedicalBillingAndCoding.Org for these researched white papers.

Along with everything else in the world, health careers are continuing to grow and expand which also increases the amount of competition vying for employment in the medical billing and coding field. So how does one take the upper hand? The answer is preparation. Gaining the upper hand over those that may be less prepared than you. It all starts with your resume and how to use the power of the internet to reach employers.

When it comes to posting your resume and cover letter online the mistake that many make is formatting. If you have a resume that utilizes keywords then it has the possibility to be:
• Indexed online
• Scanned into a database of resumes
• Read by a real person in a company’s human resources department
Types of online resumes
Here is a list of five resume versions that it would be wise to hold on to during your job searching endeavors:
1. Resume that can be scanned
a. A resume that is created for scanning purposes does not have to be fancy by any means. No highlights, graphics or clip art is needed. Keeping it simple with some bulleted skills and qualification lists should be the extent of your creativity.
2. Printed resume
a. This is a version, much like the scannable resume mentioned above, this also does not have to have a lot of bells and whistles and fancy graphics. The layout should be easy to read (bulleted lists, italicized headings, etc.) so that it can, aside from being printed, handed out, passed around or mailed to various employers in your area. It should also be noted that when you visit these health care facilities to provide them with your resume, leave them several copies and ask that if they do not need your services, if they would be so kind as to pass on your resume.
3. Text- only email copy
a. This version can often get a little tricky depending on the email service you use. Some email services have restrictions on email length. So your email should be in plain text format so that you don’t run out of room. So pay close attention to the job postings that want you to email them your resume, some will state “Will NOT open attachments.”
4. Plain text resume copy
a. This version was mentioned above with the email resume copy, it is also known as the text-only resume copy. If you have ever filled out an online resume where it asks that you copy and paste your resume into the specified box, then this is the format that you would need. This is also the format used to place your resume into online resume databases. When creating your resume regardless of the format, always check it for mistakes. Grammar, spelling and other mistakes should be found and corrected.
5. Resumes created in HTML format
a. Many new age job seekers are looking to create HTML resume formats that can be easily downloaded by a perspective employer. You don’t need to be a programming genius to create this type of resume but you will need some basic knowledge of HTML and how it works. Highlight your medical billing and/or coding specialist experience and training. Keep it clean and keep it simple.
