I've spent the last 6 years in recruitment and it has dawned upon me that 99% of the people that I talk to have, in fact, absolutely no idea what a recruitment consultant does.

We're the guys that clients phone and give jobs to every day and then we send a couple of CV's to the client, sit back and watch as the magic unfolds and count our bucks, right? Errr...no!

I've taken it as part of my daily routine to inform candidates and clients alike exactly what they can expect from my service and what we actually do to get to that magical moment of an offer, so that their expectations are managed from the outset.

I think in the same way that most sales professionals are dis-liked, recruitment consultants bare the brunt of frustration, but it is part of our job and it is up to us to educate the masses on what exactly they are paying for (or not as the case may be).

Regrettably our biggest challenge isn't the people that are getting frustrated by unscrupulous agents, but the agents themselves, and I'm afraid that if those people were working in recruitment, telesales, estate agency, law or football, their dishonesty, dog-eat-dog attitude and carelessness would still be there. Why clients and candidates still insist on working with them is beyond me.

I'm not ashamed of what I do for a living; after all, if you tell people that you help businesses save time and money that it costs them to hire people, it suddenly has a much nicer ring to it...
